This long 1,500 square meter plot, offered a particular opportunity to embed a home within the flat & elevated landscaping. The aim of Asaf Gottesman and Gottesman Szmelcman Architecture was to retain the visual continuity of the gardens and maximize views of the elevated horizon. Although the majority of the house is upon two floors, we arranged the living room and study as a kind of air-conditioned pergola from where both the front and back gardens may be viewed. The elongated reflective pool re-enforces the linearity of the plot and the play of levels between the street entrance and the house itself. Cast in fair-faced concrete using standard planks for the shuttering, the building offers a particular approach to the notion of the “window” and the “door”. All the glass windows of the home are transparent walls that are fixed and serve as points of both transparency and reflection. The tall wooden doors serve as openings for ventilation and as exit points to the gardens and terraces. Visibility and accessibility serve as counterpoints of the relationships between external and internal spaces, between the observation of Nature and the act of stepping beyond the threshold.
